Finally a Teacher

I know it has been a while since I last posted, but it was because I have had some very busy months. I graduated from the University of Ottawa, I spent a month in Austin, Texas with my boyfriend, I worked and took an online course in Ottawa, and looked for a teaching job. Luckily I was offered a position to teach the second grade part-time (so 4 afternoons and 1 morning), but unfortunately it wasn't in Ottawa.

The old saying of it's not what you know but who you know certainly rang true during my search for a permanent position. I was pretty adament about not wanting to be a substitute for a year even though it is great experience for anyone who is starting out. I just didn't like the aspect of going into someone else's class and trying to teach their students, however, finding a permanent position was no easy task. Most of the students that got offered a position knew someone either within the school or the administration. In Ottawa, I had very few connections, which is why I also focused on Manitoba, where I knew quite a few teachers. It definitely got me noticed, but it does make me feel sad that a person is rarely given the chance to show their skills before being cast aside for a friend of the family. It makes me wonder how many good teachers get passed over and how many weaker ones get hired?

Almost Done

I am currently writing an 800-1000 word essay due for tomorrow. It would have been done earlier were it not for the two exams and five other assignments I had to write earlier this week...and it's Wednesday....this is crazy. Now I know why teachers go crazy, they're pushed to the limit before they ever get to the classroom, well that and a healthy addiction to coffee!

Public Domain

So it has been a while since my last post, due to studying and holiday travel and a broken computer. Even as I type this there are a million other things that I know I should be doing, but I felt the need to share my thoughts. However, due to the fact that my parents read this blog, somethings will have to be censored as there are subjects that one should never mention in front of two people who raised them.

This brings up an interesting point...if I am too embarrassed to mention something in front of my parents, should it really be uncensored in the public domain? When I logged onto Facebook this evening and read my news feed I learned something disturbing about one of my "Friends" regarding her personal tastes in certain activities. She had apparently joined a group that announced to the world said activities in a not so discreet fashion.

Herein lies a disadvantage to Facebook. I think it's a great tool for keeping in touch with others, but there are some things I just don't want to know about these people. Some things should not be made public to the outer reaches of one's social circle. It's not that I am a prude, if it were one of my closer friends telling me directly, I would accept listen and think that she obviously trusts me a great deal. I might still not like hearing it...but sometimes you just have to suck it up...so to speak. :)
